Non-Linear Use of Power Point as an Instructional Courseware Tool & Prototyping Tool.

hyperlinked website prototype .

This page includes two examples of using Power Point in a manner that "hyperlinks" slides rather than showing them in a linear fashion. By disabling "forward mouse click" and holding certain screen features constant, you can "trick" the user into reacting to the interface in a web page format. The first is a job aid of sorts while the second is a prototype of a website which was later developed in full.

This left non-linear power point displays the basics of each stage of the Dick & Carey ISD model. It has room for links to tools, books, and screen items to assist the instructional designer.

The right hand Power Point was used during the author's internshiph to give the design team a very concrete feel of the proposed website, thereby enabling richer design dialogue.

The first project was done as part of EME6415 Developing Computer Courseware during early 2007. The assignment introduced students into the "non-linear" branching concept that lies behind much web based software and course creation tools.

The second Power Point was used to illustrate design concepts for a website under construction during the author's internship.

The first example was created with a rudimentary knowledge of the Dick & Carey ISD model. Having completed the IS program at Florida State, I no longer see the subject mater as practical for an instructional designer. Having said this, it clearly exemplifies how non-linear Power Points could serve as excellent job aids.

The second example was later developed into an actual website (Click Here) and was voluntarily done by the author in an attempt to communicate with his internship team. All of the graphic work was done by the author.

It is important to note the scope of this product. The scope of a working tool of the above sort was beyond that of the assignment in the first example (20 slides were required). As a result, the product was not filled out in its entirety. Currently, thep product is not being used, nor has the product been built into any other projects or products.

The latter, product, having served it's purpose, was superceeded by the actual website it preceeded.

The authors role in the both examples was that of the sole designer. (The Dick & Carey model itself is the well known product of Dick, Cary, & Carey). All aspects of the project were designed, completed, and revised by the author. No other contributions were received by other individuals.
